The following are articles I wrote over 8 years ago for an online health site and are still pertinent today. I've added a 2017 update for each one. The best we can do is stay up-to-date with the latest and honor our bodies by being conscious of what we put in and on them.
2017: I just read the book 'Silent Spring' by Rachel Carson. It's worth your time. From the book jacket, "The outcry that followed its publication in 1962 forced the banning of DDT and spurred revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land and water." I find myself wondering—as my body continues to detox deeply even after many years of doing so—whether these chemicals are still in the ground and water, leaching into even organic foods. I do believe that we don't really know the answers. Children coming into this world with disease and cancers...can they be caused by toxins that the mother has ingested knowingly or unknowingly? It's pretty scary when you think about it. Read the labels of everything you eat, and clean with, and put on your body. Be informed!

One of the chemicals used to make Teflon is called PFOA (ammonium perfluorooctanoate), also known as C-8. I decided to do a little more research into C-8, when one of my readers sent me a link to an article about babies being exposed to hundreds of dangerous chemicals in the womb (thanks Taylor). Before I even began to think about getting pregnant over 20 years ago, my parents had already supplied me with enough information regarding toxic chemicals in products I use on my skin, not to mention what I eat. I knew that what I ate or put on my skin would make it into my unborn baby. I started changing a lot of things back then and just continued that. Now I am blessed with the opportunity to tell all of you some of the things I’ve known for some time.
How are our unborn babies getting exposed to toxic chemicals? Here’s a quote from the article I mentioned above, “…according to a new study commissioned by the Environmental Working Group…..laboratory tests of the umbilical cord blood taken from 10 babies born in August and September of 2004 in U. S. hospitals…..revealed a total of 287 chemicals….The blood…collected by the Red Cross after the cord was cut, harbored pesticides, consumer product ingredients, and wastes from burning coal, gasoline, and garbage. Of these chemicals, the researchers say, ‘we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous systems, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests’.” Mmmmmmm….I think I’d be concerned if just ONE of these chemicals were found, let alone 287! Some of these chemicals were mercury, fire retardants and the Teflon chemical known as C-8 (PFOA). In 2009, a study at the University of California found a strong link between levels of PFOA in blood and infertility in women of child-bearing age. This chemical has also been found to alter hormone levels, affect the immune system and cause dangerously high cholesterol.
Toxic chemicals are far more dangerous to a fetus or developing child. Here we have a product, Teflon, being advertised as making life easier, but it is poisoning us and our children. This product is also used in carpet and clothing cleaners and in cosmetics and food packaging. C-8 has been linked to cancer, organ damage and other health effects in laboratory animals (I do not believe in animal testing). Two to five minutes on a stovetop and cookware coated with Teflon can exceed temperatures at which the coating breaks apart and starts to emit toxic particles and gases linked to hundreds of pet bird deaths and an unknown number of human illnesses each year. C-8 is not only in cookware, but also clothing. “According to the Environmental Protection Agency, some of the highest C-8 levels were found in children”. DuPont claims that the substance is completely safe. That C-8 is in everyone’s blood. And inhaling the chemical may get you flu-like symptoms that are reversible and last only a couple of days. A warning is on the DuPont website, but not on their pans. Time to take a second look at your cooking products? No? Ok, then I’ll give you more.
In birds, when inhaling the toxic fumes, their lungs hemorrhage and fill with fluid, leading to suffocation. DuPont has never studied the incidence of fever among users of their non-stick pots and pans.
In 2001, residents living and working around a Teflon plant and landfill, filed a class-action lawsuit against DuPont for withholding information about contaminated water, air and bodies by the chemical C-8. C-8 was originally produced by the 3M Company. 3M stopped their production due to concerns about toxicity. C-8 accumulates over time and never breaks down in your body or the environment. Local residents were drinking the water and breathing the air. Children were exposed to this chemical. Residents also worked at the plant and were lied to. DuPont has never volunteered any information. Residents are also being denied health insurance coverage due to their exposure to a toxic chemical. Cancer and birth defects are high in this area.
What else? Did you know that recent FDA studies revealed that 20% of PFOA levels in human blood may come from the leaching of PFOA coating from the lining of microwave popcorn bags?
Here’s some good news: In 2006, the EPA entered into an agreement with 8 major makers of PFOA to eliminate virtually all sources of this chemical in the environment by 2015. Could it be too little too late?
Make your own choices. Read labels. Breathe.
Allergies…..’Tis the Season
2017: I recently have been suffering from chronic sinusitis...the last two winters. Inflammation (burning) with head and neck pain, no congestion. I tried everything. Last winter at Vibrant Health Institute, I fasted often, and I juiced all the time...nothing helped. I spoke with many other guest who also suffered the same frustration. Many on antibiotics constantly and some even had surgery. This winter, when it happened again, I tried essential oils. The first night, my symptoms went away. 90% of the inflammation was gone. 100% of the headaches were gone. And whenever my headache returns, I put the diffuser on again. I use Four Thieves oil, but you can research your own oils or contact me for more info. I run the diffuse every night. I've also begun snorting coconut oil (this is helping tremendously with my dry and bloody nose). There are many benefits of coconut oil. This is one of the few things I always have on-hand in my 'medicine' chest. I use in all over my body. I also use it as a carrier oil when putting essential oils on my skin.

Here’s another topic I’m way too familiar with. Fortunately I suffer from seasonal allergies and this is the season for me. Spring and pollen. Pollens are small, microscopic particles that are produced by plants and trees during the process of reproduction. Hello spring and new growth! I was in Connecticut a couple of weeks ago and I was feeling it then, but Vermont is behind its southern states by a couple of weeks. So here I go again. The only time I didn’t have any symptoms at all was when I had been eating a 100% raw diet for at least three months. They aren’t as bad as they have been in the past and I have been keeping with a high raw lifestyle. I also try to keep the windows closed, don’t go out of the house when it’s windy and I never walk in the fields! It’s supposed to rain the next few days and that will help.
What can help? Not only increasing your raw food intake, but decreasing your processed and cooked food intake. Allergy symptoms include: asthma and coughing, sinus pressure and congestion, red itchy eyes and discharge, skin rashes, general itching of every part of your body and throat, hives and runny nose. The causes of allergies? Everything from hereditary factors, long term exposure to drugs, especially antibiotics, adverse drug reactions, airborne pollens, food additives, colorings, preservatives and flavorings. Liver dysfunction can cause an increased work load for your immune system. I never suffered from allergies in my childhood, they started during pregnancy. Not only am I allergic to spring pollens, I’m also allergic to the skin of certain fruits and veggies, even if they are organic.
Using organic produce when you can, can be a relief from many food allergies. These do not contain pesticides and additives. Selenium and zinc reduce inflammation. Other supplements for you to try are: fatty acids found in flaxseed oil, olive oil and oily fish, vitamin C, garlic and horseradish tablets, MSM powder. And foods that promote liver function like, artichoke, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, or eggs.
How about some juice recipes for allergies?
Place in your juicer or blender:
one radish, one clove of garlic, one carrot, one pear and 2 cabbage leaves
tablespoon of fresh ginger, one apple, one carrot, 2 cabbage leaves, 1/2 red onion
one cup rice, almond or coconut milk, one banana, one pear, one Tblspn flaxseed oil, one Tblspn ground flaxseed. Sprinkle with a pinch of nutmeg.
Victoria Boutenko, in her book, Green For Life, says this, “….consuming green smoothies greatly benefits the health of people through improving the level of hydrochloric acid…….consumers of green smoothies should expect…to heal allergies……”.
Some other natural allergy cures are: Eucalyptus. In a lozenge form it can increase production of saliva. It can calm coughs and relieve nasal congestion and is also an antiseptic and has antibiotic properties. The vapor from eucalyptus can clear congestion and loosen mucus.
A traditional remedy for asthma is red clover. In tea form, red clover can reduce allergy symptoms. Alfalfa can improve runny noses, sneezing and itching. Alfalfa is believed to nourish the nervous system and calm the immune system. And there’s always apple cider vinegar (this should be a staple in your kitchen), which contains many healing properties and is used to treat allergies. It is rich in vitamins E, A, B1, B2 and B6 and contains potassium and calcium and can reduce mucus in the sinuses and reduce throat inflammation.
Here’s what Louise Hay says about allergies (hay fever): Emotional congestion. Fear of the calendar. A belief in persecution. Guilt. Your mantra for allergy time? “I am one with ALL OF LIFE. I am safe at all times."

How Toxins Get In
2017 Update: As the last 8 years flew by, I've come to more and more conclusions about toxins; some of us are more loaded down than others. I guess this goes back to the first article on this page. The amount of toxins you—or your mother ingested—varies on when and where you grew up. Other ways toxins got into our system are from vaccinations and the fillings in our teeth. I was able to financial swing taking out all my amalgams many years ago, however, knowing what I know now, it wasn't done safely (UGH). A couple years ago I tried Black Salve. This is salve that you put a small amount on cancer or moles. My sister had used it to successfully remove a small mole on her neck with no scarring. I looked all over for anything on my body to use on it, and settled on a small mole on my hip. The idea was to put the salve on for three days and when you took the bandage off, the mole would be gone. After 12 hours, it was burning and I was constantly on the phone with my sister. I took it off after 24 hours, and was astonished at what I saw. In less than a day, this salve created a hole in my skin. Out of this hole oozed a moldy looking liquid. It oozed for 3 weeks. When it was done, I had a very small scar and I still had the mole. The amount of salve I put on was the size of a pin head. After doing more research, it seems that if there are toxins in your body, they will look for an opening...any opening. (I wish I took pictures of this, but no worries, I plan on doing another dose this summer.) The salve drew out the toxins. Not all of us have toxins and we respond differently to applications of Black Salve. There have been wonderful healing journeys with black salve. You can google that one. Please do not try Black Salve without looking into all of the information out there.
As far as the skin, our largest organ...I do think it's also pertinent to mention fluoride. Fluoride is a toxin. It should never be ingested (on toothpaste labels it clearly states this), however, it is in our city drinking water. I do not brush with tap water and I shorten the time I am in the shower. I also, since I do not have a filtration system in the house I live currently, go to the local market and fill my jogs with filtered water. I will be living in NY state over the summer and look forward to well water!

I talked a little in my last blog about how we absorb toxins through the skin, the largest organ in the body. Anything you put on your skin, will get into your body. A general rule would be…if you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your body. The FDA warns you of chemicals that are for external use only. So yes, I wouldn’t eat it, but even if we put these toxins on our skin, they will enter our bloodstream. A Swiss study concluded that five of the most common chemicals in sunscreen cause cancer. Several other studies actually show that appropriate sun exposure may prevent skin cancer. That’s another blog….back to how toxins can get in your body.
The nose. What are you inhaling in your work and home environment? Air fresheners, smoke, cleaning chemicals, mold, dust, pollens, and the fumes that come out of the carpeting, can all be toxins. Air fresheners only mask the odor. They are filled with deadly, poisonous chemicals. For many years I inhaled a common cleaning chemical (I had a cleaning business). When I started a wheatgrass routine, I expelled mucous the color and smell of this chemical! Anything that you can smell, is going into your body. Today we are inhaling toxins on a daily basis. Get yourself out into nature where the only thing you inhale is the air; the smell of trees and grass. Reducing the toxins you inhale can have a dramatic affect on your health, helping you with depression, anxiety, irritability, appetite, digestion and sleep.
The eyes. Through the eyes, solar energy penetrates the body. The sun is not a toxin. Lack of sun creates deficiencies and leads to imbalance and disease. Images entering the eyes are toxic. Violence from all forms of the media can create bad emotions, causing the body to become acidic. Remember, we want our bodies to be more alkaline. (UPDATE 2017: I find that I can no longer watch violence of any form on TV as it upsets my stomach and raises my anxiety.)
The ears. Things that you put in your ears as well as sound that enter your ears can be toxic. Sounds are vibration and frequency and toxins can be emotional as well as physical. My brother has done tests on growing wheatgrass. Classical music had a positive effect on the growth of wheatgrass. Certain music has been known to cause plants to wither and die. Repetitive sound can cause stress. Certain frequencies can enter through the ear and cause every cell to be stressed. This in turn causing dis-ease in the body. Toxic words from someone, can also enter your body. Stress and the body? We already know that’s a bad idea. Walk in nature and listen to all the sounds. How about chirping birds and insects, running water, and the sound of the wind for stress relief?
Okay, so toxins are out there. And not just in the air or at the local nuclear power plant. Consider not only the carbs, calories and fats that are in your food, but the chemicals in processed foods that also enter your bloodstream and organs. Address the toxins in your life today. What are you eating? What are you breathing? What and who are you listening to?
Unnatural electromagnetic energy is attacking our bodies every day. Satellites, radar, cell phones, cell phone towers, high tension power lines, electric wiring, computers, microwave ovens, and even people emit electromagnetic energy. Negatively charged ions have a positive effect on the body. These life-enhancing ions are in the running water of the stream, waterfalls or the ocean. Wind blowing through the trees also emit these ions. (UPDATE 2017: You can put the stone, Tourmaline, by your computer and electrical outlets to ward off EMF waves. If you are highly sensitive, I would not wear tourmaline on your body.)
What are you going to do today to feel good? Go outside and find some fresh air. Breathe deeply. Eliminate the amount of television, computer, and microwave use as much as you can. Speak positively. Meditate. Practice yoga. Eat slowly. Love life.
